1.2. Formation History

Ba Den Temple dates back to 1763. It was originally established by Monk Dao Trung as a small thatched shrine for local spiritual practices. Over nearly three centuries, the temple has been expanded and restored many times, with major renovations in 1930 and 1990, transforming it from a simple sanctuary into a major spiritual complex.

Although the temple has a long history, its sacred reputation comes from the legend of the young woman who transformed into Linh Son Thanh Mau. Deep belief in her blessings and protection has made the temple one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Vietnam.

2.2. The statue of the Black Lady

The original statue of Ba Den is made of hollow-cast bronze, about 60cm tall, and is considered a valuable relic. It depicts the gentle face of a Southern Vietnamese woman in a familiar seated posture: left leg folded, right knee raised, and left hand holding a wish-granting staff. The statue bears marks of war and time – such as dents and scratches believed to be from the French colonial period – which further enhance its historical and spiritual value.
